Nanshan eyes Jan output for

new Indiana casthouse

Louisville, Kentucky—The new 300 million

lb/year casthouse under construction

at Nanshan America Advanced Aluminum

Technologies’ Lafayette, Indiana, aluminum

extrusion plant should be in production in

January, and the company is starting to take

orders for business, a company official said

on October 21.

The casthouse “not only will feed our

presses, but we’ll be entertaining third-party

business for both extrusions and billet,” Eric

Angermeier, general manager, said in an

interview.

Referring to the casthouse, Angermeier

said Nanshan “expects to have hot metal in a

furnace in December. We’re hoping to be in

production and commissioning equipment in

January.”

The plant’s two extrusion presses — a

9,200 ton billet press and a 5,000 ton press —

are in “full production,” according to Angermeier.

He said first-year business at the plant has been

good, and 2014 looks even better.

The 2013 startup has been “surprisingly

smooth,” he said. “Things are coming in. I

know this is kind of the period when things

are a little slow, but we’re talking to

companies about contractual business for

2014.”

The $175 million, 600,000 square foot

plant makes high-end aluminum extrusions

used in the mass transportation, automotive,

distribution, industrial and power sectors.

The plant has about 100 employees and

that number is expected to roughly double by

the end of 2014, Angermeier said.
